Keeping Bugs Out Of Your Garden

By Rebecca Dennis

It can be a huge cause of stress if you're a gardener who has labored hard in growing all these fruits and vegetables, only to see them nibbled on by obnoxious garden pests. Once a swarm of insects finds your plants just sitting there, that means it's time for them to destroy whatever you've worked so hard for.

The best way to control these bugs is to keep them out of your garden to begin with. Sometimes you may need to use pesticides, so you need to make sure you're using something that's safe for your plants.

Be sure that you are choosing a bug spray that isn't like most - which means safe even for small children and other animals. Also, you would also want to keep some of the insects in your garden, as they may be surprisingly helpful.

Some of these helpful pests, such as ladybugs and spiders, feed on the annoying insects that damage your plants. You could even say they can serve as your garden's official bodyguards.

It can actually be very helpful to have these "good" insects and bugs present in order to drive away the undesirable pests and keep your garden in the best of shape.

You can even build homes for helpful insects and do a good job in keeping the bad pests away from your plants. Ask your local gardening center or research online for the best lure plants that can attract these helpful insects.

A clean garden is more often than not a pest-free garden too. The harmful pests are often attracted to piles of leaves, grass cuttings and dense spots of weeds. That's why it is doubly important to remove any grass cutting, stray leaves, twigs, and weeds to keep pests from "coming over to dinner" at your garden.

Some organic gardeners use a hot pepper wax that they lightly spray on the leaves of their plants. The oils from the spicy contents of this wax wards off the harmful insects and other pests as well.

Your fruits and vegetables can rest easy - the wax used in the spray is not known to "spice up" your plants accidentally. Just make sure you clean off any residue before preparing the fruits and veggies.

There are some plants that give off a scent that repels those bugs and keeps them away from your precious produce. Such plants - like marigolds and the borage herb plant - are very effective at keeping those pests away from your tomato plants. Plant them nearby and watch your tomato plants grow to be healthy and robust.

A thriving garden is the perfect reward for any gardener who has spent long hours into planting, preparing and growing all these plants, fruits and vegetables. You don't want your labor of love hatefully torn down by hordes of insects moving into your vegetable garden and chomping away.

Again, it is important to do your research well when it comes to buying companion plants or finding other ways to drive those irritating pests away from your garden.
