Create a Child's First Jewelry Box

By Sandy Fe

Perhaps you have a little girl or niece that is just begging you for a jewelry box all her own. However, before you succumb to her wishes, consider another option. Why not help her make a jewelry box all her own? That way the box will be almost as special and unique as she is.

Collect the Needed Materials

Let the craft store be your partner in fulfilling the child's dream to own her first jewelry box. Simple and fair as it is, you don't need much material. The items needed for this project include a small wood box, some glue or rubber cement, a pair of scissors, a piece of material about a square foot in size, paint markers, beads, or whatever other useful scraps you have at home to make the jewelry box unique and worth-keeping. Just do your best to uplift the child's imagination.

First Step: Prepare the Jewelry Box

The first thing in making a jewelry box is to make the box safe by ensuring that the wood box is splinter-free around the edges and corners. Most craft stores give quality wooden boxes that are splinter free, but it would not hurt if you be careful and sand down the edges with a piece of sandpaper. Always remember to sand in one direction. Teach the young artist on the proper way to properly sand the edges of the wooden box.

Step Two: Lining The Inside Of The Jewelry Box

Have you bought the pieces of material I told you to purchase? Well, that was one important piece in that that material will be used to create lining of the jewelry box. Cut the material as your guide using the box so that it will create a pattern that will line the inside of the box and the lids. Both bottom and sides have to be covered. Have your young child artist glue to the inside of the box once you have this done under your watching eyes. As you wait for the glue to dry on your jewelry box, take your young artist and gather the rest of the materials for the third and final step.

The Last Step: Beautify!

Now, the last but not the least step and sure the most amazing one is the decorating step! Take the jewelry box, and place on newspapers pile. Open up the paints, grab the beads, markers and glue, and allow your little artist to decorate the jewelry box in her own special way. Expect the messy process of course. That's part of the fun, you know. Wait and see when the paint and glue dry up. You'll be witnessing the sweetest smile of the young dreamer who helped you make her little wish come true!
