The Fun Of Buying Multi Tool Devices

By William Black

No doubt if you are going camping, one of your most essential items will be your knife. It is one of man's oldest, most important tools. Currently, knives are made of iron or steel. Before they were only made of flint, then developed into copper, then bronze. In the Afar Region of Ethiopia, in the fine-grained sediment of a dry riverbed, lies the oldest knife artifact ever known, left by the earliest people dating 2.6 million years back. Knives have developed into the device it is today since its first formation from volcanic rocks. Knives were used for hunting, building shelters, providing and preparing food, and in general, survival. Knapping was a method they used in the old times in making sharp bladed devices. It is the shaping of the tool through the process of lithic reduction. A few of the oldest knives were made out of obsidian stone.

A tool for attacking, hunting and eating were among the knife's functions. People started using the knife as an eating utensil in the 15th century. Since they were not permitted to carry firearms, they brought it with them, concealed, on their waists. A set of knives were made composed of a large hunting knife and two small paring knives. These were all stored in the same case. Knives' functions for hunting faded away since it started to be recognized as a tool for eating next to a spoon and fork.

Up until about 10,000 years ago knives were made of wood, bone, stone, flint or shell. During this time, copper was discovered and became the main material to make knives. Steel then replaced copper, 5,000 years ago. Today, with advancing technology, knives are made from ceramic, carbon fiber, or titanium.

Knives have become a collector's item. It has become a huge business for the unusual designs. You can pick out from many categories such as knives under the military section, camping section, multi-purpose section, sports section, fishing section and the pocketknife section. For finding most of the extraordinary pieces, auction sites are the place to be.

To maintain the knives condition in good working capacity, regularly clean them and store in separate leather sheaths so that they won't rust. Once in a while, apply oil so that it won't get stuck in its cover. Old guys would say, "Walks and Talks well". It means that you can smoothly pull your knife out without that feeling of getting stuck. Secure your knife away from reach of children. When sharpening the blade, do not use an electric grinding wheel. When you carry it with you, avoid putting it in the same pocket with the coins, as this may damage the handle and bolsters.

A friend of mine collects knives. His collection contains every sort you can imagine. However, the one that tops it all is the knife he customized with turquoise and coral. All the knives he collected are not only for display, he uses them too especially when he goes to camp. However, the turquoise and coral knife remains behind the glass.
