Martin Scorsese's Most Impressive Directing In Recent Memory

By Alfonzo Laurent

Plain and simple, few directors do it better than Martin Scorsese. Sure, the guy likes to stay in his comfort zone a lot of the time and work with actors that he is very comfortable with (ahem, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio), but that does not stop him from putting out some of the greatest films of all time. Scorsese is a genius and it shows in his films.

But which of Scorsese's great movies have been his best? Here are my personal top five favorites.

The first movie which I will mention is Raging Bull. This film was released in 1980, long after movies left the realm of black and white. But Scorsese returned to black and white for this movie, and I believe it was a better film because of it. Both De Niro and Pesci were amazing in this movie.

Another fantastic Scorsese film that I had only seen recently was Gangs of New York. This movie depicts the early days of New York City as most had never seen it before. Daniel Day Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio are spectacular in this one.

In an interesting choice of filmmaking, Scorsese teamed up with his new Hollywood favorite actor, Leonardo DiCaprio to make a biopic on Howard Hughes. The film we are discussing of course, is the Aviator. This is a great movie.

One movie that definitely makes the cut for me is The Departed. Few people realize that this movie was actually a remake of a Japanese classic, but in the end, it doesn't really matter. This movie was absolutely incredible and deserved to win the Oscar for Best Picture award.

One film of Scorsese's that I absolutely loved was Casino. Robert De Niro played the role of Sam Rothstein, a man who rises to become one of the most powerful men in Las Vegas. Joe Pesci is also great in this movie. Sharon Stone is evil in this movie.

While I didn't mention King Of Comedy, I feel that this movie is also one of his better, yet underrated films. Jerry Lewis shines in this one.
