The Advantages Of Tungsten Rings

By Casey Rios

When choosing a wedding or engagement ring, shoppers today have a lot of choices: yellow gold, white gold, silver, platinum, titanium, etc. However, one metal that seems to be popping up at a lot of jewelry stores is tungsten. Years ago, young couples would not think of choosing any metal except gold, but that has changed. Yet, most people do not know a lot about this particular metal, except that it has a gunmetal gray color, but there is a lot more to know about tungsten rings.

As an element, tungsten actually is symbolized by W. This is because it has another name: Wolfram. That name is rarely used, though. What most people will see is the word carbide, which just means the element is blended with carbon. This is beneficial because it increases the hardness and only slightly decreases the melting point. In fact, this metals hardness is very high on the scale of measurement, scoring and 8.5 out of 10. Here are some other advantages to getting this type of wedding ring.

Cost: No one wants to spend thousands of dollars on wedding bands. Tungsten carbide rings can run anywhere from under one hundred dollars to several hundred. This means that they are much more affordable than most gold bands. The best part is that paying less does not mean lesser quality.

Simplicity: A lot of people are looking for a simple ring, but with its own uniqueness. That is something that can be found in these types of bands. Either on its own, or with other metals and stones, the carbide has a pure and unvarnished quality that helps it stand out.

Durability: A diamond scores a ten on the hardness scale, and this element scores somewhere between eight and nine. That means that, after years of use, it still will not have a scratch or dent. Even titanium is not as hard. It also will never dull, which means long-lasting quality.

Hypo-allergenic: Many people wear all types of metal jewelry without ever having a problem, but there are quite a few who are highly allergic. For them, having an option like tungsten carbide is very important. One danger, though, is the addition of cobalt to these rings, which has become a common occurrence. Buyers must be careful that their ring is made of only carbide, so that they do not risk an allergic reaction.

Some rumors state that a tungsten ring cannot be removed if it gets stuck on a persons finger. This is not true. Even though it is very hard and dense, emergency personnel can easily take it off using special tools. Hopefully, a marriage will last as long as this type of ring does, which is forever. Of course, there will always be several options when buying rings, but none as durable as tungsten carbide.
