Heirloom Garden Seeds A Must for Survival Gardening?

By Viola Bontrager

Have you ever thought of a disaster that might last for more than seventy-two hours? In that case you might well run out of supply of your essentials contained in your survival bag. You see, everyone should make themselves prepared for a long term survival. You should be equipped enough to harvest and grow your own food, if you are left in such a desperate situation where you have no other option. You should think about survival gardening, while you are making provision for your survival gear.

Choosing the right survival seeds to keep in your store is as important as any other survival gear you might already have stored up. It doesn't matter if you have gardening experience or not you will have to learn and quickly in the event of a crisis. The average food distribution chain for supermarkets is 3 days; that basically means if the chain is broken for more than 3 days then the shelves will be empty and it does not take much, especially when people start panic buying.

There is a certain type of survival seed that you need in your seed bank, heirloom seeds or non hybrid seeds are what you need to buy. The reason is that organic seeds such as non hybrid seeds allow the farmer to collect a fresh patch of seeds each harvest ready to plant for the next.

Hybrid seeds or genetically modified seeds lack the virtue to produce new seeds. They are made to deliver a single harvest only. Hence, you need to keep your survival garden stocked with organic seeds, so that your stock is never exhausted.

Your survival gardening should be planned keeping in mind that you should gather adequate heirloom garden seeds that could last till three harvests. You need one set to plant, and the other two are stored to provide for your emergency seed bank. Every harvest will produce a fresh lot of seeds equally potential as the first one.

For your survival seed bank, you need to buy non hybrid, heirloom seeds sealed in a vacuum pack, as they last long. They are capable of delivering a continuous supply of food for years, if required. For any survivalist, it is of paramount importance to get his survival seed bank ready and plan his survival garden. In case a food crisis breaks out, it is hard to predict the duration for which it is likely to continue; one can make himself prepared for the worst calamity, when he has his survival seed bank ready.
