The Best Way To Care For Flower Bulbs

By Alex Smathersons

Bulbs really like rich and well drained soil. This is key to their success growing well. The area can be either well drained naturally or artificially.

A raised bed can be made up to 18 inches above the surface if the area is too moist to begin with. Sometimes stones may be placed on the bottom of the bed to assist in the drainage. To help with locations that are very wet, a little bit of sand near where the bulb is planted can keep standing water away from the bulb. Good results can be achieved in heavy soil by using this technique.

You can also fertilize the bulbs when planting them for better results. Although it is not necessary, it may help in the long run. It can mean the difference between good blooms and great blooms. As winter approaches, you may want to mulch the bed depending on how cold your climate gets. Once winter has passed, it may be removed again.

Lily bulbs for sale may be ordered online along with bearded iris bulbs for sale. If you own bulbs that require ground removal before winter, wait for the leaves to start to die or turn yellow. This gives time for the bulb to ripen. A common mistake is to dig early and remove leaves.

Be careful not to harm the plant while digging. After cleaning the bulbs, set them in the sun for a couple of hours and then put in a cool, dry place to wait for planting again in the spring. If you don't desire to dig the bulbs every year, many kinds of bulbs do not need this, just read the info about them before purchasing. Bearded iris bulbs for sale do not require this, nor do lily bulbs.

Make sure to get healthy bulbs from where you purchase them. My favorite bulbs are bearded iris bulbs and lily bulbs. If you are looking for great deals, wait until the end of the growing season, many times bulbs will go on sale. The only drawback with this is that it may be really late in the season to start them. You can either go ahead and plant them or store them until spring. Usually it is best to go ahead and plant the flower bulbs in your garden as long as the ground is not frozen. Free shipping on bulbs is sometimes offered by online retailers. Before you make a purchase, be sure to view all of your options.
