Advances in picnic baskets

By Vince Samios

It used to be that you would want to go on a picnic and therefore you'd grab one of the regular old picnic baskets fill it with your favorite salads and sandwiches and then head out. Once you get to the park you'd simply spread your blanket open the basket and enjoy your nice outdoor meal. In the past picnic baskets were typically wicker and had a lid that flipped open. You usually found a checkered lining inside the basket and that would not only make the basket look a little prettier, but it also worked as a little bit of insulation to keep the food at a decent temperature.

Today picnic baskets have a lot more going for them. Now you can find a picnic basket that comes with everything you'll need for the picnic except the food. Newer baskets come in all sizes, shapes and colors. You can find these new baskets with all sorts of added accessories that make the traditional picnic that much better.

A great feature that is most common is the inclusion of utensils. Most of the time the utensils are affixed to the lid of the basket. Plates are often included too, but they can be in the lid or the base of the basket. With utensils and plates you have just about everything you'd need for a picnic.

In some cases you'll notice that there is another spot in the basket designed to hold a bottle of wine. Picnics are often something that couples take part in together. A bottle of wine will make the picnic just that much better. To keep the wine cool and the food at a safe temperature you may find that some of the baskets have insulation in them. This feature can really be a handy one and isn't something you should overlook.

Beyond the features that have been added to the baskets such as built in plates, utensils and wine holders, you'll find that because of all the sizes now available, your traditional picnic basket is just much easier to carry.
