Feng Shui Decorating: Some Basic Suggestions

By Lydia Gibbons

Feng Shui decorating is over 4000 years old, used by the Chinese to build cities and monuments so we should be able to utilise the principles to do some home or office decorating.

Feng Shui is said to be the rules that govern how we use space to ensure and promote a positive flow of energy, Ying and Yang. Believed to use the laws of Heaven, Astronomy and of Earth Geography.

If we get our Feng Shui Decorating right we should increase our own positive energy known as our Chi.

We are not as fortunate as the Chinese when it comes to applying Feng Shui decorating as our builders and architects did not have this concept in mind when our homes were designed. The result of this is that we may not be able to apply the rules of Feng Shui to every aspect of our design, however we can have success by applying as many as possible.

Feng Shui decorating applied to homes is the same no matter where we are or how our homes are designed we must remove the clutter. We cannot have a positive flow of energy when there is no room to move, if we are cluttered the energy is blocked.

Having de cluttered we might be thinking about replacing furniture, if we are then we should think about the size and space available. Big is not best, bigger may seem better value, but we can obstruct all the positive flow of energy if everything is too big and if we fill every available square inch of space.

Furniture should be curved with smooth edges just like in the design of aero dynamic cars etc; we want the energy to flow round, not bounce off.

Our home has many uses we need to cook, sleep, relax work and normally we have different areas for these activities. When thinking about color for the area think about its use and our balance. If we need to be active in an office space we want energetic Yang and bold colors, but if we wish to relax in a lounge area we want peaceful Ying colors.

As we previously agreed energy flows and so therefore must light and air, for this is how energy moves about also. Doors must be able to open and windows should be as clear as possible and not shaded.

Light is not Ying and Yang, we want it always to be peaceful and harmonious never harsh and intrusive. The home therefore is no place for heavy industrial tubular lighting. Use soft comforting light and of course functional so that the light in the office is clear and bright. Candles in the right room at the right time will always help with harmony.

Every room needs a focal point. In small rooms, mirrors are good to increase the perception of size.

Feng Shui Decorating can only improve the harmony and flow of positive energy in your home, we may not be able to apply every aspect of Feng Shui but as they say every little bit helps.
