Island living apartments in Rio de Janeiro

By Mariana Ferraz

It's extremely unlikely you have heard of Ilha da Gigoia, much less been there. Definitely not a well-known place like Ipanema or Copacabana and it's not a very big island. A short walk will cover the whole spot and it should be known that there are no streets or cars. Being such a restful and relaxed situation makes for amazing accommodations. If you're seeking a different vacation escape than staying at hotels, it may also astonish you that Gigoia is in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, but yet still, most people have never heard of it, let alone have they looked for apartments there.

Being among the largest of islands in Lagoa da Tijuca, which lies at the northern end of Barra de Tijuca, close to Barra Point Shopping. Nestled away, this exceptional piece of real estate is a one of the concealed treasures of Rio de Janeiro, though still reasonably near to places like Copacabana and Ipanema. Cars are not a necessity here and there are boats that transport everyone to and from the island. The boats run 24 hours, 7 days a week. It won't take you long to get to know the ferryman and nearby people of the island.

With someplace in the local community of 2000 folks living on the island, it certainly has a sensation of community and without a doubt it will be an intriguing place to travel to. In addition to flats and apartments, the island features local bars and restaurants. Though you won't find any hotels and it's not an intense night life, it most certainly has its charms and rentals are attainable. In addition to this you can also find numerous services including internet, laundry, a small drug store, as well as a local grocery store on the island, which can be suitable.

One of the tricks though is actually uncovering apartments, flats or any kind of rentals on Ilha da Gigoia. This is where it becomes important to know people. Being one of those "off the beaten path" kind of spots, uncovering accommodations on this fantastic little island paradise isn't as easy as surfing the internet or opening a newspaper. In this case, it really becomes needed to get out there and meet people. If you're searching for a place to live on the island, that little hole in the wall bar placed near the "main street" has now become your portal to the local community. Just ask around, eventually you meet someone who knows someone who can point you in the right direction.

With some luck, you will soon find yourself in your new soothing island home. Away from the stressful city life, sounds of traffic and typical nuisances. The perfect atmosphere for anyone who is trying to find a little peace and quiet and a different way of life. Not your normal holiday in hotels. So sit back, relax and enjoy the appeal that this little island life has to offer. Enjoy Rio de Janeiro in a diverse light.
