Making Your Kitchen Smell Great

By Jeremy Foxe

Being the place where you cook your food, the kitchen cannot help itself from becoming smelly now and then. This should not be a problem provided the smell is gone a few minutes after you have finished your cooking chores. However, this does not always happen because odours can actually stay much longer. You probably have noticed that even your ventilator cannot be trusted in removing the smell from your kitchen. This can only mean one thing - that you should learn techniques of how to make your kitchen smell good.

As the cliche goes, prevention is still the better option and this is applicable to the smell in kitchens. Naturally, the best preventive effort that can be done is cleaning the kitchen regularly. While doing so, you must peek inside every cupboard, drawer, and cabinet and find items that could be the source of the smell. It is possible that you forget about certain food items that have become spoiled while inside the cabinets. You should also wipe the cabinets with a damp cloth to remove the odour vapours that have clung to it.

The kitchen floor should always be dry. Not only will this prevent slips, this will also prevent your floor becoming a source for a bad odour. It is usual for kitchens to have dirty floors because of unavoidable food spills. However, if the spill is caused by cooking oil, wipe it with a paper towel and then cloth afterward. Once done with the floor, go to the waste bin and see if it needs to be empty and cleaned. Cover it tightly with its lid so that the smell cannot come out.

It has been found that kitchen wash cloths and other material also retain odours easily. Therefore, you may have to change the curtains with new ones and wash those used previously with strong detergents. You may also have to reduce the number of curtains in the kitchen too. Because of this, you may have to alter your kitchen design in order to lessen the number of curtains being used. Go for the modern and minimalist ones instead.

While you are cooking, it's pretty much inevitable that you'll spill food without noticing - however, these spills do become noticeable when they stain. These blots or stains may be small but they are a major cause of odours in kitchens. That is why you should make it a habit to wipe these off after you use the kitchen. If you delay this job, even for a few days, you may have problems in removing the stains. However, you only really need to concentrate on the areas that spattering is most likely to occur.

When you are done cleaning the place, put deodorisers in the kitchen. You should, however, use those that are made for kitchens only. These are often mild enough and have scents that do not have any effect on the food. Nevertheless, just to be on safe side, place the deodoriser far from the cook top and the food storage area. The presence of deodoriser doesn't mean you don't have to clean the kitchen as often. It is most effective when your kitchen is clean and rid of any particularly strong odours.
