ATV Riding Skills: Tips For Safety

By Mike Paul

While All Terrain Vehicles can be awesomely fun, they can also be a big responsibility. There are many things to remember to keep yourself safe, such as wearing the proper clothing, helmet, and so much more. Every time you go out, practice safe ATV riding skills. Here are just a few things to remember on your next ride.

Use the Manual - One way to improve safety and learn about ATVs is to read the manual. This is the first way to get to know how your machine works and what it's capable of. Sit on your ATV while reading about it so you can get a feel for where everything is.

Familiar Trails - When you've been down a trail a few times you know all the things that make the path unique. You anticipate where the turns are. You're familiar with that spot with the tree stump. Riding on paths that you know is good for people starting out and learning technique. If you decide to branch out onto another less known trail, make sure that it is suitable for recreational ATV use.

Look Where You Want To Go - This is a good rule no matter what kind of vehicle you're driving. You will subconsciously steer where your eyes are looking, so be sure to focus on the path around obstacles instead of directly on the obstacles themselves. Also, when you look at the path ahead, you give yourself time to react to any potential problems that might arise.

Accept Your Limitations - Everyone starts out as a beginner. You only get better with time. If you ride with a group that is more experienced than you, don't be afraid to ask for help or let people know when you're not comfortable.

This can be a very enjoyable sport, but remember that you will have more fun if you practice safe ATV riding skills. An accident that injures you or damages your ATV is a surefire way to ruin a great ride. Avoid the trouble and stay safe when you ride.
