Seven Tips for Barefoot Running

By Robert Andrews

If you are interested in barefoot running, then keep in mind some important tips to keep you going.

1. Listen to Experts

Others might think you are out of your mind for being interested in barefoot running. Don't listen to these people. Instead, listen to those who are more experienced in barefoot running than you are. Check online forums and groups who discuss all about barefoot running.

2. Choose a Smooth Tar

Smooth roads are a runner's bestfriend. The smoother the road is the better. Focus on finding roads with less crap to start your training. You'll realize that as you do more practice, you'll find it comfortable to run on all sorts of surfaces with less pain.

3. Five minutes for a Good Start

People who are starting Barefoot Running usually over-due it initially because they can. Unluckily, that would mean pain in lower calves and feet for a couple of days. You should start with a 5-minute run (as a smooth warm-up) then continue with normal speed after that. Do this for a week then increase it to 10-minute on the second week. Keep this up then eventually you'll run 30+ minutes at a time.

4. Knees should be Lifted

You will get used to running barefoot in no time. If your soles haven't gotten used to the thought yet, then you will have yourself blisters as a reward. Focus yourself on lifting your knees high rather than pushing off your feet as if you're wearing shoes. This is to gain a good transition for your feet.

It will take time but your body will thank you for it.

5. Vibram Five Fingers

Many barefoot runners start up with Vibram Five Fingers. They are perfect in getting your form right as you get used to hitting painful objects with less direct intensity on your skin. KSO model is recommended as it keeps pebbles out and keeps your confidence high as you become a super runner.

6. Have Tweezers and Super-Glue

Barefoot running pose a great risk for you to step on a piece of glass or acorn. If it happens, it must be removed right away. Bring tweezers, super-glue, and alcohol wipes with you in an Amphipod always in case of emergency.

7. Track Running

It's recommended to try out the track while weather is good and go miles without worrying about your foot.
